Apart from the "conventional" chromating products and our Thin Layer technology we also supply chromium free pre-treatment processes for aluminum and galvanized steel.
These processes are based on polymers and silanes in combination with a low concentration of zirconium or titanium and are only used as end passivation or "no-rinse" systems.
The conversion coatings formed are much thinner than a chromate layer but will always give excellent adhesion to any coating and comparable corrosion resistance in the artificial corrosion tests. When applying these processes a regular and precise process control is required because pollution of the chromate free process bath will directly affect the quality of the formed layer and temperature variance has a direct influence on the thickness of this layer.
The chromate free pre-treatment processes also goes together with the necessary pre-treatment and rinsing steps such as degreasing and possibly pickling. If the products to be treated are extruded pickling is a requirement to remove the extrusion layer. Certain quality labels such Qualicoat require that a certain amount of aluminum should be etched off before applying the chromium free conversion coating.
